Apple's QuickTime Plug-in for the Netscape Navigator 3.0
Read-me for Macintosh and Windows Users
Apple's QuickTime plug-in lets you view QuickTime content and QuickTime VR
Panoramas and Objects directly in your web page. This read-me describes what
you will need and how to use the Macintosh or Windows version of Apple's
QuickTime plug-ins for Netscape Navigator 3.0.
What you need to use the QuickTime Plug-in
MACINTOSH USERS - Recommended configuration for Macintosh users:
o Macintosh or Power Macintosh running System 7 or later
o Navigator 3.0 or later, "Minimum" or "Standard",
o QuickTime 2.5 for Macintosh
o Macintosh Sound Manager version 3.2 for Macintosh (included in System
7.5.3)
o Apple's QuickTime Plug-in 1.0 for Netscape Navigator 3.0
o Version 1.0.2 or later of the QuickTime VR (Virtual Reality)
Components for Netscape Navigator (Macintosh)
o Sufficient free RAM (see below)
o For best performance, turn Virtual Memory off
Macintosh RAM requirements depends which version of Navigator 3.0 or later
you use.
We recommend your Macintosh have an additional 1 MB of free RAM beyond that
required by Netscape Navigator 3.0. For instance, if you are using the
Navigator "Minimum" version, which in recent releases came configured to use 9
MB of RAM, you will need 10 MB free to run Navigator and the plug-in.
Check the RAM requirements for Navigator by clicking on the Navigator icon and
choosing "Get Info" from the File menu.
Your RAM mileage may vary so you may not require as much as stated above. Gold
vs. non-Gold versions of Navigator may require different amounts of memory, and
future versions of Navigator may require less memory. Turning off unneeded
extensions and quitting other running applications may help reduce memory
requirements.
Please note that QuickTime itself and the QuickTime VR component are *not*
included with Netscape Navigator 3.0, but you can download them from
the QuickTime Software page (http://quicktime.apple.com/sw/sw.html).
The QuickTime VR components file contains software used by the Quicktime
plug-in to play QuickTime VR Panoramas and Objects, and must be in the same
folder as the QuickTime plug-in. You must quit and re-launch Netscape after you
have download the QTVR software and moved it to your plug-ins folder. If you
have never seen QuickTime VR before, be sure to stop by Apple's QuickTime VR
web page (http://qtvr.quicktime.apple.com/) to learn more about this cool software.
WINDOWS USERS - Recommended configuration for Windows users:
o A 386, 486, or 586/Pentium PC running Windows 95, NT or 3.1
o 8mb RAM
o Netscape Navigator 3.0 or later for your version of Windows
o QuickTime 2.1.1 for Windows
o Apple's QuickTime Plug-in 1.0 for Navigator 3.0
o Version 1.0.3 or later of the QuickTime VR (Virtual Reality) for
Windows software (QTVRW.QTC).
Please note that QuickTime itself and the QuickTime VR component are *not*
included with Netscape Navigator 3.0, but you can download them from
the QuickTime Software page.
The QuickTime VR Software (QTVRW.QTC) file must be in the WINDOWS directory of
your primary drive. If you have never seen QuickTime VR before, be sure to stop
by Apple's QuickTime VR web page to learn more about this cool software.
IMPORTANT NOTE for Windows Users:
All Windows software comes in two flavors: 16-bit (for Windows 3.1
users) and 32-bit (for Windows '95 and NT users). In order for the plug-in to
work, it must be the same "flavor" as your version of Navigator. When you
download any of the software listed above, make sure you download the correct
version: the 32-bit version if you are using Navigator for Windows '95 or NT,
or the 16-bit version if you are using Navigator for Windows 3.1. Additionally,
if you are using the 16 bit version of Navigator 3.0, you must have SHARE.EXE loaded. Check your AUTOEXEC.BAT startup file for the statement "C:/DOS/SHARE.EXE"
and add it if it is not there.
What the plug-in does for Macintosh and Windows users
Apple's QuickTime plug-in for Netscape Navigator 3.0 lets you experience
QuickTime content directly in the browser window. You no longer need a "helper
application" like MoviePlayer to view QuickTime content over the internet. You
can also view QuickTime VR (Virtual Reality) Panoramas and Objects right in
your browser, after downloading the QuickTime VR software from Apple.
The QuickTime plug-in works with existing QuickTime movies, and with movies
prepared to take advantage of the plug-in's "fast-start" feature. The
fast-start feature will present the first frame of the movie almost immediately
and can begin playing even before the movie has been completely downloaded.
Netscape Navigator 3.0 or later uses the QuickTime plug-in automatically to
play any QuickTime movie while browsing the Internet. The plug-in can play many
kinds of QuickTime movies (.mov files) including movies with text, MIDI, and
other kinds of data. If you have downloaded and installed the QuickTime VR
component, it will also let you interact with QuickTime VR Panoramas
and Objects.
Here are some Frequently Asked Questions
Q I am running Windows '95 (or NT). I downloaded the QuickTime VR software
(QTVRW.QTC), installed it in my WINDOWS directory, and rebooted. But When I run
Navigator with the QuickTime VR component, I can't view QuickTime VR Panoramas
and Objects.
A You need the latest version (1.0.3) of the QTVR software. Additionally, you
must make sure you match the "flavor" (16-bit or 32-bit) of the QTVR software
with the "flavor" of QuickTime and Navigator. See the note in the Windows
requirements section above for more information about this.
Q I downloaded Netscape Navigator 3.0, but the QuickTime plug-in doesn't seem
to be working.
A Navigator 3.0 lets you pick plug-ins for different types of content, just
like you pick helper apps. You may need to pick the QuickTime plug-in in the
Navigator "Options/Helpers" dialog to make the QuickTime plug-in work. You
should also make sure the plug-in is in the Plug-ins folder and that you have
re-launched Navigator since downloading the plug-in. If Navigator will not let
you choose the plug-in in its Preferences dialog, you may need to remove the
Netscape preferences folder from your System folder and re-launch Navigator.
Q How do I save a QuickTime movie from a Web page to my hard-drive?
A Just click and hold the mouse (right-hand button for Windows) down over the
movie. A popup will appear that lets you save the movie.
Q I design web pages and would like to know more about movie controls and other
capabilities of the QuickTime plug-in. Where should I look for documentation?

Q On a Macintosh, when I click on a QuickTime VR Object or Panorama, I get a
blank window. How do I get VR to work with the QuickTime plug-in on the
Macintosh?
A You may be missing the QuickTime VR components file in your plug-ins folder.
The QuickTime VR components file contains software used by the Quicktime
plug-in to play QuickTime VR Objects and Panoramas, and must be in the same
folder as the QuickTime plug-in. Visit http://quicktime.apple.com/software/ to
download the QuickTime VR components software. If you have the VR Components
file installed properly and still get a blank window, you may not have enough
free memory. Try quitting open applications or disabling unneeded extensions to
increase your free memory.
Q On a Windows machine, when I click on a QuickTime VR Object or Panorama, I
get a blank window. How do I get VR to work with the QuickTime plug-in on
Windows?
A You may not have the most recent version (1.03) of the QTVRW.QTC file in your
WINDOWS or WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. QTVRW.QTC contains software used by the
Quicktime plug-in to play QuickTime VR Objects and Panoramas, and must be in
your WINDOWS or WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. Visit
http://quicktime.apple.com/software/ to
download the QTVRW.QTC. If you have QTVRW.QTC installed properly and still get
a blank window, you may not have enough free memory. Try quitting open
applications or adjusting your virtual memory settings in the System Control
Panel. Finally, you must make sure you match the "flavor" (16-bit or 32-bit) of
the QTVR software with the "flavor" of QuickTime and Navigator. See the note in
the Windows requirements section of this document for more information about
this.
Q On the Macintosh, QuickTime movies don't always play smoothly. What's wrong?
A Check to see if you have Virtual Memory turned on. Virtual memory can
interfere with the plug-in's ability to play back QuickTime movies. If
possible, turn virtual memory off for best performance.
Q I found a page with background audio and a VR Panorama. As I was playing with
the VR movie, the audio stopped playing. Why?
A When you are interacting with the VR movie and moving the mouse, the audio
movie will stop temporarily. Releasing the mouse button should allow the audio
to resume.
Q I am browsing a page with a QuickTime VR panorama and expect that I can use
the option and control (shift and control on Windows) to zoom in/zoom out of
the movie. Likewise, with a regular QuickTime movie, I expect the arrow keys to
step through the movie a frame at a time. However, these movies don't seem to respond to keystrokes.
A You need to select the QuickTime VR panaroma or QuickTime movie first by
clicking on it. On Windows, the arrow keys do not work.
Q I have a Power Macintosh with 16 MB of RAM. When I try to run a movie with a
MIDI music track, I get no audio.
A You are probably still using QuickTime 2.1. QuickTime 2.1 requires additional
memory to play MIDI movies. Youd should upgrade to QuickTime 2.5, which is
available now on the quicktime.apple.com software page.
